Scope and Content Note

Gerry wrote an extensive set of primarily cruise historical compilations drawn completely from observations maintained in personal logs. These compilations represent a unique and interesting insight into life as a Physical Oceanographer working at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from 1946 through his retirement in 1979 and continuing on through his final cruise in 1984. There are also electronic copies of the compilations and an extensive series of photographs from several of the cruises represented in the compilations.

Biographical Information

William Gerrish (Gerry) Metcalf retired in 1979 from the WHOI Physical Oceanography Department.

The William G. Metcalf papers consist of 50 manuscripts of historical cruise compilations, from 1946-1984, drawn completely from observations maintained in personal logs.

The manuscripts are organized in three series:

Custodial History

The manuscripts were held in Metcalf's home in Falmouth prior to their donation to the Archives.

Acquisitions Information

William (Gerry) Metcalf donated the manuscripts in a number of different accessions from February 1994-March 1996. The accessions were numbered as acc.1994-01. Metcalf's son, Michael, donated the material in the photographs series, as well as some of the electronic files as acc2009-23.
